Removing Asbestos for Safe Urban Growth

Banner Environmental Services recently completed a multi-phase asbestos abatement project at a vacant site in Worcester, Massachusetts, where aging industrial structures once stood. The property is now part of a planned redevelopment effort that will bring new housing to a growing section of the city.

Before construction can begin, environmental remediation is essential. Our team was brought in to ensure the site met all regulatory and safety standardsโ€”setting the stage for a clean, compliant start.

Supporting Responsible Redevelopment with Professional Asbestos Abatement

With many New England cities experiencing a surge in mixed-use and residential development, Worcester is no exception. This siteโ€”once home to aging infrastructureโ€”required comprehensive asbestos removal to comply with local and federal regulations.

Banner was trusted to manage the abatement phase, ensuring the property was safely cleared of hazardous materials before redevelopment began.

Multi-Phase Asbestos Removal: Scope of Work

The work included:

  • Removal and disposal of approximately:
    • 2,650 square feet of 9×9 asbestos floor tile and mastic
    • 200 linear feet of friable duct insulation (TSI)
    • 100 linear feet of air cell pipe insulation
    • 100 linear feet of non-friable exterior caulking
    • 4,000 square feet of non-friable asphaltic roofing material
  • Full containment procedures with HEPA filtration and decontamination
  • Proper packaging, labeling, manifesting, and disposal of all asbestos waste
  • Coordination of third-party clearance testing as required by MassDEP and DLS regulations

Each phase was carefully managed to minimize disruption and ensure a safe, clean transition for future development.

Why Asbestos Abatement Matters in Redevelopment

Redeveloping older commercial or industrial parcels requires more than just architectural visionโ€”it demands environmental responsibility. Asbestos, once a common construction material, poses serious health risks if not handled properly.

Our early involvement allows developers to avoid delays, maintain compliance, and protect workers and the community.

A Clean, Asbestos-Free Slate for Whatโ€™s Next

Banner Environmental Services takes pride in being the first step in a property’s transformation. By completing this project safely and efficiently, weโ€™ve helped make way for new possibilitiesโ€”cleaner, safer, and built to last.
