Precise Asbestos Abatement at Bristol County Superior Courthouse

Historic Property, High Standards

In Taunton, Massachusetts, the Bristol County Superior Courthouse stands as a testament to the region’s long judicial history. But even iconic buildings must undergo vital maintenance to remain safe and functional. Banner Environmental Services was called in to handle a highly targeted asbestos abatement project on the building’s gallery walkway—executed in carefully planned phases to ensure full compliance, safety, and minimal disruption.

Project Overview: ACM Roofing Coating Removal

The scope of work focused on the removal of approximately 440 square feet of asbestos-containing roofing coating from the exterior gallery walkway. Given the nature of the material and its location, the work was broken into four distinct phases, with one-quarter of the walkway addressed per phase. This method ensured a systematic and controlled abatement process without affecting daily courthouse operations.

Strict Compliance and Containment Protocols

Every phase of the project adhered to local, state, and federal asbestos regulations, including:

  • Submitting the mandatory ten-day asbestos notification form (ANF-001) to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP)
  • Coordinating independent third-party air and visual clearance in accordance with MassDLS regulation 454 CMR 28.10 (9)
  • Constructing full containment around the affected areas
  • Utilizing shrouded grinders and flat tools to ensure safe, controlled removal of asbestos-containing materials (ACM)

As always, Banner provided complete logistical coordination for third-party hygienist services, including estimated clearance costs and scheduling—offering the courthouse peace of mind and project efficiency.

The Banner Difference in Courthouse Projects

Working in a high-security, high-traffic public facility such as a courthouse requires precision, professionalism, and flexibility. Banner Environmental’s team is trained to operate discreetly and efficiently in sensitive environments—where public safety and operational continuity are paramount.

By segmenting the abatement work into four well-defined phases and implementing stringent safety protocols, we ensured zero exposure risk, minimal disruption to courthouse operations, and full regulatory compliance from start to finish.

Why Safe Roofing Coating Removal Matters

Asbestos-containing roofing coatings are often overlooked, but over time, weather exposure, foot traffic, and aging materials can cause these materials to degrade—posing a serious inhalation hazard if disturbed without proper containment. Removing these coatings from walkway areas is especially important, as these surfaces are subject to vibration and wear.

At Banner, we don’t just follow safety protocols—we lead with them.
