Partnering with a Global Brand for a Local Project
Banner Environmental Services was recently selected to provide selective demolition services for the Ben & Jerry’s facility in South Burlington, Vermont—a project that called for precision, planning, and deep respect for both the building infrastructure and our client’s operational needs.
Ben & Jerry’s, a globally recognized brand known for its commitment to community and sustainability, required interior demolition across two levels of its space. Our work had to balance efficiency with care, ensuring that critical building systems and interior structures were dismantled and removed without disrupting surrounding areas.
Interior Demolition Scope: Level 1
Banner was tasked with a wide range of interior removal services on the first floor. This included:
- Removing specific sections of gypsum wall board (GWB) to accommodate new door assemblies
- Detaching existing wall signage and non-tinted glass films
- Scraping floors following the removal of existing VCT, LVT, and carpet tile (glue/mastic removal excluded unless required post-removal)
- Dismantling millwork, cabinetry, and base cabinets—including items at the café coffee bar
- Taking down light fixtures (40 units total) and acoustic ceiling tile systems
- Removing select MEPFP/FA systems, such as plumbing fixtures, HVAC components, fire alarm systems, and associated wiring or conduits
Throughout the demolition, our team ensured that remaining metal framing stayed intact, preserving the structural integrity of partitioned spaces.
Interior Demolition Scope: Level 2
The second-floor work involved a similar, yet even more expansive, selective demolition scope:
- Additional GWB wall and framing removal (over 175 linear feet)
- More acoustical ceiling removal, including grid and tile (~1,200 SF)
- Dismantling LED skylight panels, curtains and tracks, and operable partitions
- Removing furnishings and office tech, including projector mounts and wall-mounted TVs
- Disconnecting and disposing of multiple MEPFP/FA components, with GC support to prep large equipment for safe removal
Our team also removed all flooring and resilient base, conducted glass film and wallpaper removal (excluding tinted areas), and performed final clean-up and furniture wipe-down, as requested.
Safety Measures and Special Considerations
To protect interior finishes and ensure a safe, contained work environment, Banner:
- Installed plastic film floor protection (6 mil)
- Used temporary containment walls for dust and debris control
- Followed strict demolition sequencing to avoid damage to retained features
- Conducted scope confirmations alongside the general contractor before work commenced in each phase
Glue and mastic removal were scoped as time-and-material (T&M) contingencies, to be added only if required following floor finish removal.
Clean, Controlled Demolition for a Community-Oriented Brand
From start to finish, our team executed this multi-phase selective demolition with precision and professionalism. The Ben & Jerry’s facility was cleared of outdated or redundant structures, leaving a clean slate for the next phase of renovation.
Projects like this highlight Banner Environmental’s strength in controlled interior demolition—balancing environmental safety, client needs, and logistical complexity in highly customized environments.
