Setting the Stage for Asbestos Abatement and Selective Demolition in Bristol, RI
Banner Environmental Services was proud to partner with Roger Williams University (RWU) in Bristol, Rhode Island, on a transformative project that blended structural change with critical environmental safety. At the heart of RWUโs School of Engineering, a stadium-style lecture hall and several classrooms were scheduled for renovation to support the universityโs evolving needs. But before new ideas could take root, the old frameworkโand the hazardous materials embedded within itโhad to be safely removed.
This project called for a trusted partner to execute both asbestos abatement and selective demolition. Banner was honored to answer the call.
Demolition and Asbestos Abatement at a University Combined
Bannerโs work was multifaceted, involving demolition of interior walls, fixtures, flooring, and concrete, along with the safe removal of various asbestos-containing materials (ACMs).
Selective demolition work included:
- Full removal of the stadium-style seating lecture hall
- Demolition of interior classroom and office walls
- Removal of existing ceiling finishes, casework, doors, frames, and hardware
- Saw-cutting and concrete excavation for installation of new footings
- Removal and disposal of pre-cast stairs and handrails
- Carting and disposal of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems
Asbestos abatement included:
- 3,750 sq. ft. of ACM joint compound and wallboard
- 4,000 sq. ft. of asbestos-containing floor tile beneath carpet
- ACM found in pipe fittings, door frame caulking, expansion caulking, window glazing, and caulking
- All materials were safely packaged, labeled, and transported to licensed disposal facilities in full compliance with state and federal regulations
Overcoming Challenges in an Active University Setting
Working in a university environmentโespecially a space dedicated to science and engineeringโrequires strict attention to safety, containment, and minimal disruption. Our team coordinated closely with RWU facilities management and other trades to schedule work during periods of low campus activity and ensure proper ventilation and HEPA-filtered negative air containment systems were in place.
Our licensed asbestos technicians used specialized methods to safely remove embedded materials from difficult-to-reach surfaces while preserving the structural integrity of the building and protecting occupants from airborne fibers.
A Foundation for Innovation
The lecture hall and classroom spaces were not just outdatedโthey were a barrier to innovation. By removing aging structures and abating hazardous materials, Banner helped clear the way for RWU to reimagine its engineering department with new, collaborative environments.
With the space now safe and stripped to its core, the university can proceed with renovations that support cutting-edge learning, design labs, and dynamic student spaces.
Why Banner Was the Right Fit for this Asbestos Abatement and Selective Demolition Project
At Banner Environmental Services, we specialize in projects that require both technical precision and environmental responsibility. The RWU project is a perfect example of our commitment to safely modernizing educational institutions while preserving occupant health and regulatory compliance.
With over 25 years of experience serving New England, Banner is a trusted partner for schools, colleges, municipalities, and contractors who need more than just a demo crewโthey need a team that understands risk, regulation, and responsibility.
