We were recently engaged to perform asbestos abatement at a residential property in Harwich, Massachusetts, focused on safely removing asbestos-containing materials discovered throughout interior walls, ceilings, and an exterior chimney area.
Like many homes on Cape Cod, this residence contained legacy building materials that predate modern safety standards. Our role was to methodically remove these materials while protecting the occupants, surrounding spaces, and the overall structure — all in full compliance with Massachusetts DEP and DLS regulations.
This project required a carefully sequenced interior abatement approach, extensive containment, and third-party clearance to ensure the home was left clean, safe, and ready for the next phase of renovation.

Scope of Residential Asbestos Abatement Work in Harwich, MA
The scope of work was developed based on site conditions and regulatory requirements and included the following abatement activities:
- Removal of all cabinets, casework, and non-asbestos materials as needed to access affected walls and ceilings
- Temporary storage of non-asbestos materials in the basement for disposal by others
- Removal of approximately 20 linear feet of asbestos-containing exterior chimney caulking
- Removal of approximately 5,500 square feet of asbestos-containing joint compound, including associated gypsum board and insulation
- Work performed throughout most living areas, with select rooms excluded per the project plan
Every phase of the removal process was designed to limit disturbance, control fiber release, and maintain a safe environment within the residence.
Asbestos Containment, Engineering Controls, and Work Practices
Given the scale of asbestos-containing materials involved, we constructed a full negative-air HEPA-filtered containment system throughout the active work areas.
Key safety measures included:
- Sealed work zones with critical barriers
- Continuous negative air pressure using HEPA filtration
- A three-stage decontamination unit for safe worker entry and exit
- Wet removal methods to prevent airborne fibers
- Strict adherence to OSHA and the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards
These controls ensured that asbestos fibers remained fully contained and that adjacent areas of the home were protected throughout the project.

Asbestos Removal Regulatory Compliance and Third-Party Clearance in Massachusetts
As required by state regulations, we filed the appropriate ten-day asbestos notification (ANF-001) with the Massachusetts DEP before the start of work.
Once abatement activities were complete, we coordinated with an independent, third-party hygienist to perform:
- Final visual inspections
- Clearance air sampling
- Documentation confirming the area met re-occupancy standards
This independent verification provides homeowners with added confidence that the space has been properly remediated and is safe for future use.

Residential Asbestos Abatement on Cape Cod
Homes in Harwich and throughout Cape Cod often contain asbestos in joint compound, insulation, caulking, and other finish materials — particularly in properties built or renovated before the 1980s.
Projects like this one highlight the importance of:
- Early identification of asbestos-containing materials
- Licensed, regulated removal by trained professionals
- Proper containment and clearance before renovation or re-occupancy
Handled correctly, professional asbestos abatement allows homeowners to move forward with confidence while preserving the integrity and safety of their homes.
