At Fitchburg Memorial Middle School, safety is more than a priority—it’s a necessity. When it came time to address the presence of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) within the school, South Coast Improvement Company entrusted Banner Environmental Services with the task of executing a thorough and regulation-compliant asbestos abatement project.
Asbestos in older educational buildings poses serious health risks, especially in high-traffic areas. Our goal for this project was clear: identify, remove, and properly dispose of all hazardous materials—efficiently and safely—so the school could continue serving its students without disruption or concern.
Comprehensive Asbestos Abatement Services for a Middle School
Asbestos abatement is a specialized process that requires attention to detail, strict adherence to safety protocols, and seamless execution. For this project, our team performed:
- Submission of a 10-day asbestos notification form (ANF-001) to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP)
- Full compliance with local, state, and federal asbestos regulations
- Removal and disposal of approximately:
- 900 square feet of asbestos-containing flooring
- 120 square feet of asbestos-containing ceiling tiles
- 31 unit ventilators with ACM transite panels and insulation (including underlying plywood as needed)
- 75 linear feet of asbestos-containing pipe insulation
This multi-point abatement covered a range of materials, each demanding its own containment strategy and disposal method. We implemented full containment procedures, including negative air pressure systems and sealed work zones, to protect all personnel and maintain air quality throughout the school.
Asbestos Abatement Within a School Environment
Executing abatement projects in educational settings requires a higher level of coordination and sensitivity. Although Memorial Middle School was not occupied during the work, Banner adhered to strict project timing (Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM) and followed all procedures to minimize noise, dust, and disruption.
We also provided our own containers and parking logistics, helping the site remain clean, organized, and free of unnecessary foot traffic. Our team worked with the general contractor to coordinate phasing, mobilization, and daily communication.

As with all Banner projects, compliance wasn’t just part of the job—it was the foundation.
- All materials were packaged, labeled, manifested, transported, and disposed of according to regulatory standards.
- The work was performed under prevailing wage requirements, demonstrating our commitment to fair labor practices and industry compliance.
- All unit prices were broken out for transparency, including options for demo add-ons and ACM contingencies.
